Scholarships
Supporting education in the arts has been a focus of Great Waters Music Festival since its inception. The Great Waters Scholarship Program was established in 2004 to provide financial assistance as well as the opportunity to participate in choral workshops and sing with a professional chorus and orchestra. In 2010 the Great Waters Scholarship was awarded to seven local youths in the areas of voice, jazz guitar, piano and sound and recording technology. Offering scholarships is another opportunity for Great Waters to promote music and music education in the Lakes Region. Great Waters Music Festival scholarship applications are accepted between January and May 1 each year from New Hampshire Lakes Region residents. High school, college or graduate students with an interest in pursuing a career in some facet of music education or performance qualify to apply for financial assistance. Financial assistance scholarship recipients are announced in June and honored at one of the Great Waters concerts. Scholarships are also available for students of any age to participate in the Great Waters Chorus Festival. Recipients attend choral and vocal workshops and rehearse with 100 other singers selected from around the country, along with a professional orchestra in preparation for the big night. The scholarship program is funded in part through the generosity of donors including the Freihofer Family Trust and the Nancy P. Marriott Foundation, through ticket sales and individual donations. One dollar from every ticket sold throughout the season is applied to the scholarship fund. In 2009 two very special awards were created in recognition of two outstanding individuals who have significantly contributed to the Festival’s own development. The Dr. Gerald Mack Award for Music Education recognizes an outstanding student of music education or performance and has been established in honor of the Founder of Great Waters Music Festival. The Bob Schneider Award has been set up to perpetuate the memory of a dedicated Festival volunteer whose own love of singing will be passed along through a scholarship to a vocal student.
