GREAT WATERS MUSIC FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP

Supporting education in the arts has long been one of the major goals and activities of Great Waters Music Festival. Offering scholarships is another opportunity for Great Waters to promote music and music education in the Lakes Region.

“The Great Waters Scholarship Program was established in 2004 to provide financial assistance as well as the opportunity to participate in choral workshops and sing with a professional chorus and orchestra,” says Great Waters Music Festival Board Member and Education Chair, Kim Hunter. “In 2007 Great Waters awarded scholarships to nine local youths in the areas of vocal and violin performance, music management and music therapy studies.”

Great Waters Music Festival scholarship applications are accepted between January and May 1 each year from New Hampshire Lakes Region residents.

High school, college or graduate students with an interest in pursuing a career in some facet of music education or performance qualify to apply for financial assistance. Financial assistance scholarship recipients are announced in June and honored at one of the Great Waters concerts.

Scholarships are also available for students of any age to participate in the annual summer Great Waters Festival Chorus.  Recipients attend choral and vocal workshops and rehearse with 100 other selected Eastern Seaboard singers and a professional orchestra in preparation for the annual Great Waters Festival Chorus concert.

The scholarship program is funded by a $1 per ticket fee as well as donations.

Applications and information may be obtained by contacting the Great Waters office at (603) 569-7710, or by Emailing us at info@greatwaters.org.

The following programs are considered to be well-matched with the Great Waters Music Education Scholarship.

Scholarships are NOT limited to these programs.

This year sees two very special inaugural awards that have been instigated in recognition of two outstanding individuals who have significantly contributed to the Festival’s own development. The Dr. Gerald Mack Award for Music Education recognizes an outstanding student of music education or performance and has been established in honor of the Founder of Great Waters Music Festival. The Bob Schneider Award has been set up to perpetuate the memory of a dedicated Festival volunteer whose own love of singing will be passed along through a scholarship to a vocal student.

The 2009 scholarships were awarded to Katelyn Boudreau, a student at Belmont High School and a world music voice student who will be attending and traveling with the Village Harmony Singing Camp this summer; Leina’ala Hoover, of Rochester and a student at St. Elizabeth Seton School who will attend the University of New Hampshire’s Summer Youth Music School (SYMS) to further study in piano; Nathan Lacey, a senior at Moultonboro Academy who has been accepted at the University of New Haven where he will pursue studies for a career in sound recording; David Nieman of Wolfeboro, a student at Brewster Academy who will continue his studies of the piano; and Sarah Olzerowicz of Wolfeboro, a senior at Kingswood High School, who has been accepted to Rhode Island College where she will pursue a minor in Musical Theatre.

Two former Kingswood high school students also received awards: Dan Healy of Melvin Village, a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in music (jazz guitar) at the University of Southern Maine; and John Petruzelli a sophomore at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA majoring in guitar performance with an emphasis in recording technology.

Healy, Hoover, Lacey and Petruzzeli are all summer volunteers with Great Waters Music Festival.

This year’s recipients of the inaugural awards are Sarah Olzerowicz for the Bob Schneider Award and Dan Healy for the Dr. Gerald Mack Award for Music Education. Along with the cash awards received, awardees and their parents are invited as guests of the Festival to the Great Waters Festival Chorus and Orchestra concert on July 18th where awardees appear on stage in recognition of their achievements.
