CHORAL & VOCAL WORKSHOPS*
Wednesday, July 16
Workshop 1: Music Theatre Workshop
2:00 - 3:30 PM
This workshop will present an overview of Musical Theater, focusing on the evolution of the idiom from “Showboat” to “A Light in the Piazza”. Mr. Jones will lead a Master Class-Style Workshop offering direction ranging from technique to appropriate style. The workshop is open to both performer and observer and will be beneficial to all. Ten participants, chosen in advance, will submit two contrasting selections to perform for the class, one from 1925-1971 and another from 1971-present. As a suggestion, the “giants of the genre” should include (but not be limited to) Kern, Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Herman, Webber & Rice, Sondheim, Coleman, Kander & Ebb, Schonberg & Boubil, Brown, and Guettel. If you would like to be considered as a soloist for this master class, indicate on the registration form.
Clinican: Thomas Jones
Thomas Jones, baritone; winner of the NATS national singing competition; semi-finalist Bel Canto Foundation & NY Oratorio Competition; appearances with opera companies, orchestras & choruses throughout the U.S., Europe & West Indies; voice faculty for 14 years at Harvard University.
Workshop 2: Meet The Conductors and Artists
4:00 - 5:30 PM
This session is offered as an opportunity for choral participants to interface with professional artists and conductors on a personal basis. Each clinician will present a chosen topic dealing with an important aspect of the choral and vocal art. Topics will focus on, but will not be limited to, communication through conducting, psychology of rehearsal, audition preparation, musical style, interpretation and group vocal technique. Problems facing community, church and school choral programs will also be discussed. Join us for this informal workshop and bring your questions and concerns for a sharing of knowledge.
Clinicians: Dr. Gerald R. Mack, Andy Campbell, Thomas Jones & Jayne West.
Andy Campbell has been the director of music for Brewster Academy since 1993, and has also conducted Clearlakes Chorale since 1997. He has worked with the Great Waters Music festival since 1998. Before coming to Brewster Academy, Andy served as director of choral music at the Santa Barbara Conservatory of Music and Arts, the Cate School, and the Vocal Institute of the University of California at Santa Barbara. He holds a bachelor degree in composition and theory from the University of Lowell and two master degrees in conducting from the Yale School of Music, where he was the recipient of the Phillip Nelson Prize, the Marshall Bartholemew Scholarship and the Charles Ives Scholarship, all for excellence in choral conducting. While at Yale, he served as assistant conductor for the Yale Glee Club, the Yale Camerata and the Battell Chapel Choir.
Workshop 3: Master Class in Voice for Soloists & Choral Singers
7:30 - 9:00 PM
This workshop will offer insightful approaches to vocal technique and song interpretation. Areas of focus will be vocal placement, diction, breath support, resonance and performance practice. Repertoire can range from classical to arts songs and ballads. The workshop is open to both performers and observers. If you would like to be considered as a soloist for this master class, indicate on the registration form.
Clinician: Jayne West & Thomas Jones
