Workshop 1: Gospel Music in the African American Tradition
2:00 - 3:30 PM
This workshop will present an historical overview of African American music. Aspects of performance practices in Gospel Music will be discussed and demonstrated. Emphasis will be placed on vocal technique, style, interpretation, rhythm and tone. The class will become the vocal ensemble and learn how to teach and perform a variety of traditional and contemporary gospel songs.
Clinican: Geoffrey Dana Hicks
Mr. Hicks is Minister of Music at the Tremont Temple Baptist Church in Boston and is a well-known authority on Gospel Music. He is a renowned jazz pianist, composer, recording artist, teacher and conductor and has toured throughout Europe and South America. He is former conductor of the New England Conservatory Youth Chorus and the Handel and Haydn Children’s Choir.
Workshop 2: Vocal Technique Master Class for the Soloist & Choral Singer
4:00 - 5:30 PM
This in-depth workshop will focus on breath support, control, vowel placement, diction, resonance, performance practice and vocal maintenance. Mr. Jones will work with a limited number of selected soloists while others learn by observation. If you would like to be considered as a workshop soloist, please indicate this on the Choral and Vocal Workshop Registration form. Repertoire can range from classical to music theater.
Clinician: Thomas Jones
Mr. Jones is a renowned soloist and conductor of master classes for soloists and choirs at colleges, conservatories, high schools, churches and music festivals throughout the United States. At Harvard University he serves as Vocal Coach for “The Hasty Pudding Theatricals” and teaches a full compliment of voice students.
Workshop 3: Choral Dinner Theatre
7:30 - 9:00 PM
Nancy Roblin and members of her Frederick Chorale from Maryland will share their experience combining great choral music with food to create wonderful choral dinner theater events. Workshop covers choosing venues, food and cost issues, event design, possible themes, scripts and acting, music selection, solos and small group aspects, audio, lighting and costume issues. You will receive sample scripts and programs and share ideas about getting started on a tight budget.
Clinician: Nancy Roblin
A graduate of Vassar College, Nancy holds a M. Music in organ performance and choral conducting from Boston University. She is founder of the Frederick Chorale and has been the Music Director for the past 30 years. The chorale has performed in the Middle Atlantic States, Canada, the UK and the Middle East as well as on American Choral Directors Conventions.
